About Board Game Therapy™

A facilitation framework that helps groups use tabletop games intentionally for connection, growth, and meaningful group experiences.

Board Game Therapy™ is a facilitation framework created by Sean Smith that transforms how groups approach tabletop gaming. Rather than leaving outcomes to chance, BGT™ provides structured methods for using games intentionally to foster connection, growth, and meaningful group experiences.

The framework centers on the TABLE method: Target, Assess, Build, Lead, Extract & Extend. This approach helps facilitators match games to group goals, guide productive discussions, and translate gaming experiences into lasting insights and stronger relationships.

BGT™ treats tabletop games as structured social spaces where groups can practice problem-solving, collaboration, and honest conversation. The method turns that table time into reliable facilitation tools that work across different group types, from family game nights to team-building sessions.

Board Game Therapy™ is not therapy, diagnosis, or clinical treatment. It is a practical framework that leverages the unique social dynamics of tabletop games to help groups achieve specific relational and developmental objectives.

The framework operates across three distinct scopes, each with tailored approaches for different group contexts and desired outcomes. Whether facilitating casual connection or structured growth experiences, BGT™ provides clear guidelines for maximizing the potential of any gaming session. Start with what BGT is and is not if you want the short definition first.
