HOW BGT™ WORKS

A Structure for Purposeful Play

BGT™ facilitators use TABLE to shape the experience before, during, and after play.

Target

Define what the experience is meant to focus on.

Assess

Consider the people, setting, needs, and level of challenge.

Build

Choose and shape the game experience intentionally.

Lead

Facilitate the table while allowing authentic play and interaction.

Extract & Extend

Reflect on what happened and connect useful insights to what comes next.

TABLE shapes the experience. Then reflection helps players make sense of what happened at the table.

Example: Hanabi for communication

What a TABLE session looks like

Hanabi is a cooperative card game where you can see everyone's cards except your own, so every clue is a guess about how someone else will read it.

  1. Target: notice how players give and read clues, and what happens when a clue lands differently than intended.
  2. Assess: check the player count, the time, and whether anyone has a high need for control or precision.
  3. Build: play an open-handed practice round, and say clearly that misreads are part of the design.
  4. Lead: pause only between turns, never during a clue, and keep a neutral face.
  5. Extract and Extend: debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what players make of it. Do not tell them.

Sean founded a weekly Board Game Therapy™ social support group and built the TABLE Method™ from facilitation practice with groups that needed clearer structure around shared play. Good tables already create connection. A clear goal, a ready table, steady facilitation and a board-first debrief help that connection carry into everyday life.

Shape the encounter, not the person.
