Just One TABLE Method™ Game Guide cover

What the game is

A cooperative word game. One player, the active player, tries to guess a Mystery Word. Everyone else secretly writes a one-word clue. Before the guesser looks, identical clues are canceled, so the guesser only sees the clues that were unique.

Why it works at a table

Just One gives every non-guesser a contribution in every round, written privately and at the same time, so nobody has to perform alone. When two people write the same clue, it simply disappears. That makes “thinking alike” a normal event rather than a failure, and it gives the group a concrete way to talk about how meaning is shared.

Try one variation

Clue pairs (BGT house rule, not an official rule). Two clue-givers (never including the current guesser) choose one clue together and write it on one shared easel, so the pair produces one clue in total. In 3- or 4-player sessions, this replaces the standard two-clue arrangement with one agreed clue per pair. Ordinary cancellation rules apply to all clues.

  • Targets: Cooperation and inclusion
  • Suits: Newer players, younger players, or anyone who prefers company
  • Watch for: One partner always writing. Alternate.
  • Debrief prompt: “How did the two of you choose?”

The TABLE Method™, applied

A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.

  1. Target

Notice how players choose clues and how the group handles canceled clues and uncertainty, without assigning motives.

  2. Assess

Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.

    • Can everyone read and write a single word comfortably? Offer large markers or a scribe by agreement.
  3. Build

    • Suggested BGT practice round: one practice card with no score, so first clues are free to miss.
    • Optional BGT accommodation: anyone may skip the active seat. Passing the easel is a full turn.
  4. Lead

    • Keep comparison quick and neutral. Read canceled clues in a flat voice, then tip the easels.
    • Do not reveal or comment on anyone's clue to set up the debrief.
  5. Extract and Extend

Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.
