Mysterium TABLE Method™ Game Guide cover

What the game is

A cooperative mystery. One player is a ghost who cannot speak and communicates only through dreamlike picture cards. The other players are psychics trying to read those visions to reconstruct what happened.

Why it works at a table

Mysterium lets people send and receive meaning through images, where being partly understood is the normal state. A psychic who is misread gets another vision and tries again. That makes it useful for practicing partial disclosure and staying in the game after a misunderstanding.

Try one variation

Facilitator ghost (role-selection policy) (BGT house rule, not an official rule). A facilitation adaptation, not a rule change. The facilitator, or an experienced volunteer, plays the ghost.

  • Targets: Inclusion and protecting new players
  • Suits: Any group with new members; the book's main watch point
  • Watch for: The facilitator steering through clue choice. Choose clues honestly.
  • Debrief prompt: “What did you notice about the ghost's clues?”

The TABLE Method™, applied

A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.

  1. Target

Notice how psychics read images, how they respond to being misread, and how the group supports each trail.

  2. Assess

Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.

    • Who will be the ghost? The book says do not assign it, and do not give it to a new participant; the role concentrates exposure for the whole game.
  3. Build

    • Invite an experienced volunteer to play the ghost, or take the role yourself. Do not place a new participant in that role without their informed agreement. Explain that the ghost gives nonverbal clues throughout and may have less chance to join group discussion.
    • Use the rulebook's easier setup for a first game.
  4. Lead

    • As ghost, choose visions with care and keep your face neutral.
    • As a facilitator watching, keep comments about the cards, not the people reading them.
  5. Extract and Extend

Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.

Game not included; play by the rulebook in your box. In the BGT book: Introduction, Chapter 10 (The Courage to Be Seen) anchor game, Appendix C (Stage 3; scope: all, with the debrief tightly calibrated), and Appendix F (twelve-week weeks 9 to 10). Independent companion. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Libellud. Mysterium is a trademark of its owner and is named only to identify the game.
