Pandemic TABLE Method™ Game Guide cover

What the game is

A fully cooperative game. The team is a disease-control group racing to discover cures for four diseases before outbreaks spread too far. Each player has a role with a distinctive ability that can contribute to the team's strategy.

Why it works at a table

Pandemic presents a shared challenge while giving players different abilities and opportunities to contribute. Because the game is cooperative, a group can examine how it shares decisions and responds to setbacks without competing. Some groups meet a dominant decision-maker; others negotiate choices more evenly. This guide helps you notice and discuss either pattern without blame or treating game behavior as a diagnosis.

Try one variation

Introductory difficulty (official variant, in the official rules). Use the rulebook's introductory setup: 4 Epidemic cards placed by the official setup procedure, not simply shuffled into the deck.

  • Targets: Introducing cooperation at the lowest published difficulty and making a first session more approachable
  • Suits: First games and groups sensitive to losing
  • Watch for: Experienced players finding it too easy. Raise difficulty next time.
  • Debrief prompt: “How did the level of challenge affect the way we planned, communicated, and responded to setbacks?”

The TABLE Method™, applied

A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.

  1. Target

Notice how the team shares decisions, how each role contributes, and what happens when one voice starts directing everyone.

  2. Assess

Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.

    • Is there time for a 45-minute game plus teaching? If not, play the introductory setup and stop at a set time.
  3. Build

    • Use the introductory difficulty (4 Epidemic cards, set up by the official procedure) for a first game.
    • Hand out role cards and have each player read their ability aloud.
  4. Lead

    • Play a role yourself, and ask before giving advice.
    • When one player starts directing, name the pattern neutrally at a planned pause, not mid-turn. Treat outbreaks as the board's move, not anyone's fault.
  5. Extract and Extend

Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.

Game not included; play by the rulebook in your box. In the BGT book: Chapter 2 (What Your Brain Does When You Play) anchor game, Chapter 5, Appendix B (Stage 3 example), Appendix C (Stage 3, scope: all), and Appendix F. Independent companion.
