The Quacks of Quedlinburg TABLE Method™ Game Guide cover

What the game is

Players are quack doctors brewing potions. Everyone draws ingredient chips from their own bag at the same time, pushing their luck. Draw too many white cherry bombs and your pot explodes. Coins from good potions buy better ingredients for future rounds.

Why it works at a table

Quacks produces dozens of small push-or-stop decisions with an immediate, visible result. Explosions are frequent and recoverable, and the rat-tail catch-up mechanic can help trailing players stay competitive, though it does not guarantee a comeback. That offers a repeated, low-stakes look at the moment between impulse and action, and at recovering after your own choice goes wrong.

Try one variation

Say it, then draw (BGT house rule, not an official rule). Starting after the fifth chip you place in a potion phase, pause before each further draw and choose “draw” or “stop,” silently or aloud. A quiet or nonverbal choice is fine if speaking would disrupt concentration. All standard ingredient effects and potion rules are unchanged.

  • Targets: The pause between impulse and action
  • Suits: Groups working on slowing down a decision
  • Watch for: Speaking choices aloud can add social pressure; keep the silent option visible.
  • Debrief prompt: “What did the pause before each draw feel like?”

The TABLE Method™, applied

A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.

  1. Target

Notice how players decide when to stop, and how they recover after an explosion, without labeling anyone as reckless or timid.

  2. Assess

Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.

    • Is the group ready for a game where busting is common? Name it before play.
  3. Build

    • Use the publisher's marked beginner ingredient books and starting bags for a first game.
    • Say before play that explosions happen to everyone and that the rules give you a choice after one.
  4. Lead

    • Keep the pace even; let a slower player finish drawing while others wait.
    • Treat explosions as the bag's doing, not a verdict on anyone's judgment.
  5. Extract and Extend

Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.

Game not included; play by the rulebook in your box. In the BGT book: Chapter 4 (Losing Well) anchor game, Appendix C (Stage 2, scope: all), and Appendix F (six-week week 5; twelve-week weeks 7 to 8). Independent companion.
