Sheriff of Nottingham
Credibility, bluffing, and negotiation under unequal power · Stage 4
What the game is
Players are merchants bringing goods into Nottingham. Each round, one player is the Sheriff and decides whom to inspect. Merchants declare what is in their bags, and may tell the truth, bluff, or offer a bribe.
Why it works at a table
Sheriff puts negotiation, credibility, and unequal power into a lighthearted package. Every round asks the same questions: do I trust this person, what would it take, and how do we carry on after someone got caught? The book offers it as a lighter negotiation tool than Catan with a stronger social texture.
Try one variation
Honest first round (BGT house rule, not an official rule). During the first Sheriff round only, every merchant must declare exactly the type and quantity of legal goods packed. After that round, normal bluffing resumes.
- Targets: Building trust before bluffing
- Suits: Any group new to the game
- Watch for: Players bored by it. Keep it to one Sheriff round.
- Debrief prompt: “What changed once bluffing was allowed?”
The TABLE Method™, applied
A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.
Target
Notice how players negotiate across a power gap, how trust is judged, and how the table recovers after a bluff is caught.
Assess
Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.
- Has the group agreed to a game with bluffing? The book calls for the same consent conversation as any deception mechanic, at lower intensity.
Build
- Have the consent conversation: bluffing is part of the game, and anyone may choose truthful declarations all game without announcing it.
- Play the first Sheriff round with every merchant honest so people learn the flow.
Lead
- Keep bluffing playful and about the goods, never about character.
- End every round with a clear return to the table (“and we are all just merchants again”).
