So Clover!
Shared meaning and being understood · Stage 3 (BGT suggestion)
What the Game Is
A cooperative word-association game. Each player secretly writes one-word clues linking pairs of keywords on a clover-shaped board, then the team rebuilds each clover from the clues while its owner watches in silence.
Why It Works at a Table
So Clover! turns understanding each other into the whole game. Each clue is a small act of saying what I mean, and each rebuilt clover shows the team how a clue landed. The Spectator's silent turn is a structured, sometimes revealing experience of hearing others work through your clues while you cannot explain them; some people find that exposing, so talking about it afterward stays optional, and the team never competes, so the score belongs to everyone.
Try One Variation
Thumbs check (BGT house rule, not an official rule). Before the team locks in a placement, every guesser shows thumbs up, sideways, or down, and any sideways or down vote gets a turn to speak.
- Targets: Inclusion in group decisions
- Suits: Groups with quieter members
- Watch for: Keep the check quick so the game keeps moving.
- Debrief prompt: “Did the check change any of our decisions?”
The TABLE Method™, Applied
A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.
Target
Notice how players explain their thinking to each other, how the team handles disagreement about a clue, and how the Spectator manages staying silent while others work on their board.
Assess
Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today’s goal.
- Can everyone read and write single words? Offer a scribe partner, or use the partner clover variation below.
Build
- Model one clue out loud with a sample pair before anyone writes.
- Name that a missed clue is a gap between two minds, not a mistake by one person.
Lead
- Keep the Spectator's silence light; a simple hand signal for “I'm okay” helps.
- Make sure every guesser gets a say before the deciding player chooses.
Extract and Extend
Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.
