Spirit Island TABLE Method™ Game Guide cover

What the game is

A complex cooperative strategy game. Players are elemental spirits defending an island from invaders. Each spirit works in a different way, so the team succeeds by letting each spirit do what it does best.

Why it works at a table

Spirit Island makes distributed leadership felt rather than taught. No spirit can cover the whole island, and each is strongest in its own terrain. Players experience letting another spirit hold a territory, watching it handled differently, and finding that it worked. The book uses it for over-functioning and delegation.

Try one variation

Official introductory setup (official variant, in the official rules). The rulebook's recommended first-game setup, not a separate variant: low-complexity spirits with their Power Progression Cards; if everyone is new, the printed Blight space instead of a Blight Card; no adversary or scenario. Follow the rulebook for your edition.

  • Targets: Learning with lower stakes
  • Suits: New groups
  • Watch for: Experienced players finding it easy. Add an adversary later.
  • Debrief prompt: “Did the lighter setup let you learn?”

The TABLE Method™, applied

A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.

  1. Target

Notice how players share responsibility, let others lead in their strengths, and resist covering everything themselves.

  2. Assess

Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.

    • Is the group ready for a complex game? Spirit Island has a heavy rules load.
  3. Build

    • Official recommended introductory setup: choose low-complexity spirits and use their Power Progression Cards. If everyone is new, use the printed Blight space instead of a Blight Card and play without an adversary or scenario.
    • Teach one phase at a time with the phase order card visible. An uninterrupted introductory game takes 3 to 4 hours; this plan is a timed partial game unless the group already knows Spirit Island.
  4. Lead

    • If you know the game, avoid running other players' turns.
    • Describe lands by location, and credit each spirit's contribution without implying it owns territory.
  5. Extract and Extend

Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.

Game not included; play by the rulebook in your box. In the BGT book: Chapter 11 (Carrying the Team) anchor game, and Appendix F (twelve-week weeks 9 to 10). Independent companion.
