What the Game Is

A fast card-drafting game. Everyone picks one card from their hand at the same time, then passes the rest along. Players try to build the best sushi meal over three rounds.

Why It Works at a Table

Sushi Go puts players in contact through the cards they pass, without any need to talk. Everyone acts at once, so nobody waits in the spotlight. The book uses it as the example of Stage 2: brief, rule-bounded exchanges that carry very little social risk.

Try One Variation

Gift a dish (BGT house rule, not an official rule). Once per game, during normal selection, a player may designate their chosen card as a gift to an adjacent player. Reveal as usual, then place the gift in the recipient's collection; the recipient owns and scores it. For an introductory game, chopsticks, wasabi, and pudding cannot be gifted. The recipient may decline; the card then stays with the giver.

  • Targets: Generosity and perspective-taking
  • Suits: Established groups and families
  • Watch for: Gifting to the same person every time. Notice it lightly.
  • Debrief prompt: “What was it like to give or receive a card?”

The TABLE Method™, Applied

A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.

  1. Target

Notice small moments of attention to other players, such as what they are collecting, without requiring conversation.

  2. Assess

Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.

    • Can everyone handle simultaneous choices? Children may need a helper for the first round.
  3. Build

    • Teach with one practice round, no scoring. This is an unscored facilitation exercise, not part of the published rules.
    • Keep a scoring reference card visible.
  4. Lead

    • Play along at the same pace as everyone.
    • Keep scoring quick and cheerful.
  5. Extract and Extend

Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.

Game not included; play by the rulebook in your box. In the BGT book: Chapter 5 (The Loneliness Map) and Appendix B, as the Stage 2 example. Independent companion.
