Ticket to Ride
Planning, patience, and handling a blocked path · Stage 2 (BGT suggestion)
What the Game Is
Players collect colored train cards and spend them to claim railway routes between North American cities, aiming to connect the cities on their secret destination tickets. It mixes quiet planning with moments when someone else takes the route you needed.
Why It Works at a Table
Ticket to Ride is easy to teach and calm to play, but it has a reliable emotional moment: someone claims the route you were saving for. How a player responds to that block (rerouting, freezing, or blaming) is a small, safe version of handling a setback. The secret tickets also give a natural prompt about goals that others cannot see.
Try One Variation
Reroute moment (BGT house rule, not an official rule). After another player claims a route you wanted, you may ask for one 30-second table discussion at the start of your next turn. It grants no extra action: you then take one normal turn and make the final decision yourself.
- Targets: Flexible thinking
- Suits: Groups working on frustration tolerance
- Watch for: Keep the 30 seconds friendly, not a lecture.
- Debrief prompt: “What helped most when you were blocked?”
The TABLE Method™, Applied
A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.
Target
Notice how players plan, how they respond when a route is blocked, and how they talk about hidden goals at the end.
Assess
Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.
- Can the group handle a 60-minute game? If not, use the shorter variation below.
Build
- Pre-sort trains by color and have the score track visible.
- Explain that blocking happens in the game and is usually about the blocker's own route.
Lead
- Teach with one sample turn of each kind.
- Keep score yourself so players can focus on the board.
Extract and Extend
Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.
