The Crew: Mission Deep Sea
Quiet teamwork with very limited talk · Stage 3 (BGT suggestion)
What the Game Is
A cooperative trick-taking card game. The group shares a mission, such as making sure certain players win certain tricks, but no one may say what is in their hand. One small, structured signal per player per attempt is the only way to share information.
Why It Works at a Table
The Crew asks a group to succeed together while almost everything that would normally help (talking, pointing, sighing at a bad card) is off the table. That makes the small channels that remain very visible: one signal, a pause before a play, trust that someone else will cover a task. Failure is cheap because a mission takes a few minutes and you simply try again, so groups get many low-stakes practice runs at coordination, patience, and repair.
Try One Variation
Calm-signal rule (BGT house rule, not an official rule). Between completed tricks, never mid-trick, when a trick goes wrong, everyone takes one breath before the next lead. The facilitator models it. Avoid sighs or faces that could act as hints.
- Targets: Emotional regulation
- Suits: Groups working on frustration tolerance
- Watch for: Keep it light; it is a shared ritual, not a punishment.
- Debrief prompt: “What did the pause do for you?”
The TABLE Method™, Applied
A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.
Target
Notice how the group plans when talk is limited, how people handle a mistake that sinks a mission, and whether the captain role is shared or dominated.
Assess
Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today's goal.
- Is trick-taking new to the group? Teach following suit with one open practice hand before the first mission.
Build
- Start at mission 1 even with experienced players; early missions are short and forgiving.
- Name the no-hint rule as a shared challenge, not a test, and agree that sighs and faces count as hints for everyone.
Lead
- Play a seat yourself for the first mission. Before stepping out, confirm at least three players remain; otherwise use the official 2-player setup or keep playing.
- After a failed attempt, say what happened in neutral terms and restart quickly.
Extract and Extend
Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.
