Bomb Busters
Careful teamwork under pressure with very limited talk · Stage 3 (BGT suggestion)
What the Game Is
A cooperative deduction game. The team defuses a bomb by cutting matching pairs of numbered wires, one of yours and one of a teammate's, without talking about what you hold.
Why It Works at a Table
Bomb Busters gives a group a shared goal, real tension, and almost no permission to talk about what each person holds. Every cut is a visible act of trust: one player commits, and a teammate reveals the result. Because missions are short and a failed attempt simply restarts with a new Captain, the game gives many low-stakes practice runs at staying calm, taking a measured risk, and recovering together after a mistake.
Try One Variation
Kind word after a miss (BGT house rule, not an official rule). After a wrong cut, one teammate says one supportive line before play continues (“fair guess” or “we've got this”).
- Targets: Repair after mistakes
- Suits: Groups where mistakes cause blame
- Watch for: Keep it genuine and short; never forced or sarcastic.
- Debrief prompt: “How did the kind word change the next turn?”
The TABLE Method™, Applied
A short excerpt from the full guide's TABLE plan. Anyone can pass, pause, or stop at any time.
Target
Notice how players handle pressure before a cut, how the group responds when a cut goes wrong, and whether the Captain role is shared or dominated.
Assess
Check the player count, the time, and whether the game serves today’s goal.
- Is the bomb theme okay for this group? For some people, explosions or bomb imagery may not suit; choose another game if so.
Build
- Start with the training missions, even with experienced players.
- Name the no-hint rule as a shared challenge, and agree that sighs and faces count as hints for everyone.
Lead
- Play a seat yourself for the first mission, then step out to observe.
- After an explosion, say what happened in neutral terms and restart quickly.
Extract and Extend
Debrief in order: Board, Self, Us, Life or Work, Extension. Ask what participants make of the game. Do not tell them.
